March Seed Sowing

March is one of the busiest and most exciting months in the gardening calendar. As daylight increases and the soil begins to warm, it’s time to start sowing a wide range of vegetables, herbs and flowers. Ideal seeds to sow in March in the UK include tomatoes, chillies, sweet peppers, courgettes, cucumbers, aubergines and brassicas such as broccoli, kale and cabbage. Outdoors, you can begin sowing broad beans, beetroot, carrots, parsnips, spinach and lettuce, provided the ground isn’t waterlogged or frozen. Herbs like parsley, coriander and chives also do well when started this month. For a touch of colour, start sweet peas, marigolds and nasturtiums under cover ready for planting out later in spring. Use a greenhouse, cold frame or sunny windowsill to give tender crops a warm start, and protect young seedlings from frost with cloches or fleece. With Seed Envy’s carefully selected seeds, you can make the most of March’s growing potential and set the foundation for a productive year ahead.
